Putin has awarded the pilot killed in Syria the title of Hero of Russia.

MOSCOW: President Vladimir Putin awarded major Roman Filipov the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. The relevant decree was published on the Kremlin’s website on Tuesday, February 6.

“For the heroism, valor and courage shown in the performance of military duty, to confer the title of Hero of the Russian Federation to Major Filipov Roman Nikolaevich (posthumously),” the document says.

Earlier it became known that the body of the Russian pilot who died on February 3 in the Syrian province of Idlib, was delivered to the Chkalovsky military airfield near Moscow.

It was reported that a part of the debris of the downed attack aircraft was also delivered. The Defense Ministry noted that it is especially important to get the remains of engines with traces of the missile, which shot down Filipov’s plane in order to accurately determine the weapons used by the militants.

The Russian Su-25 attack aircraft was shot down in Syria during a standard patrol mission. Major Roman Filipov ejected and landed, then took the on the fight and blew himself up with a grenade to avoid captivity. Before this, the pilot shouted: “This is for you, for the guys!”

Responsibility for the attack was assumed by the terrorist group “Jays al-Nasr.”.
